On the Rocks
A section of the Vatnajökull glacier around the peak of Hvannadalshnúkur near Hof in Iceland. This is the largest glacier by volume in Iceland and Europe and covers an area of between 8100 and 8300 sq. km, and is up to 1000m thick.
Under the ice cap, as under many of the glaciers of Iceland, there are several volcanoes. Most people will remember the eruption in May 2011 that caused so much disruption with flights as well as creating havoc in the local area. The plume reached as high as 20km or 12 miles.
